Naruto Shippuden is a continuation of Naruto.
Naruto ended at episode 220 with Naruto and Jiraiya leaving Konoha to train together to become stronger. Naruto Shippuden starts off with Naruto returning to Konoha after 2 and a half years of training under Jiraiya. Turns out that everyone else was training just as hard as Naruto. That's basically what happened.
Although Naruto episodes 1 - 135 are the actual episodes. If you want you don't have to watch episodes 136 - 220 cause those are filler episodes. Just put in place to keep the pace and distance from the manga. If you are done episode 135 you can start Naruto Shippuden. However if you want to see Naruto leaving Konoha, you have to watch episode 220 of Naruto -- or better yet, watch the very last arc.
